Elizabeth Woollin who married John Johnson at St Margaret in the Close, Lincoln 3rd June 1738

  • Who was the mother of John Johnson baptised at Beckingham 1742?

The baptismal records in the Beckingham Parish Register shows that John Johnson’s parents were John Johnson and Elizabeth. Some have John’s mother as wife as Elizabeth Woolin but as there was no source I was dubious about this. I have recently found the marriage of John Johnson of Beckingham and Elizabeth Woolin of North Collingham on 3 June 1738 at St Margaret in the Close, Lincoln, ex Parish Register (Lincs to the Past).

The marriage in June 1738 fits perfectly with the birth of the first of their fifteen children, John, baptised (and died) in 1739. Given that John is recorded as ‘of Beckingham’ there is very little doubt this is the right marriage. The marriage record gives Elizabeth Woolin ‘of North Collingham’ so this is the first place to look for her origins.

BMD Registers www.bmdregisters.co.uk provides the following:

1725? Ann account of Joseph Woolling children by Elizabeth his wife

Ann Woolling born 9th of 6th month 1712.

Elizabeth Woolling born 9th of 8th month 1715

Mary Woolling born 18th of 12th month 1718.

These are non-conformist records and the place of birth is not given but they are definitely from the Newark area.

There are earlier marriage records of Joseph Woolling:

We know that Naomi Woolin the wife of Joseph Woolin of North Collingham died on 15th day of (seventh?) month and was buried at Besthorpe.

I suspect Ann Woolin died between her marriage to Joseph in 1698 and the birth of Joseph’s daughter Anne in 1712 and Joseph married Elizabeth who was the mother of the three daughters sometime during this period.

Joseph Wooling was buried at Besthorpe on 27 Nov 1733.

Given Joseph Woollin lived in North Collingham and the year of his daughter Elizabeth’s birth in 1715 there is no doubt they are our ancestors

To find:

  • the death of Ann Woolin 1698 – 1712
  • the marriage of Joseph to Elizabeth 1698 – 1712
  • the birth of Joseph Woollin
