Where was Joseph Challis (1758 – 1834) of Ramsgate from?

By Debra van Diel Kluit and Clive Boyce

The first Challis family we have found living in Ramsgate, Kent is that of Joseph and Ann Challis and their children in the early 1800’s.  Joseph made his will in 1827 in which he refers to his honoured mother Sarah Challis. She died shortly after in March 1828 and was buried at St Lawrence, Ramsgate aged 91.  We know from Joseph’s will that he left nine surviving children: Ann Wife of Charles Smith, Joseph, Elizabeth, William, Charles, George, Francis, Henry, and James share and share alike”. We are direct descendants of Henry and Francis.

Seven of the children were baptised at St Lawrence, Ramsgate. As the will puts them in order of baptismal dates it is very likely that all children are cited in strict order of age in the will and that Ann and Joseph were the first two children. Census data establishes that daughter Ann who married Charles Smith was born on London around 1790. We have not found her baptism and it is doubtful whether she was daughter of both Joseph and Ann. We suspect that she was daughter of a previous marriage. The next child, Joseph, had a twin sister Sarah, and they were baptised at St Mary, Marylebone in 1796. Sarah must have died young as she is not mentioned in her father’s will. She probably died of fever on 29 April in 1810, recorded as Ann Challis , aged 13. 1810 was  annus hornbills  for Joseph and Ann as their son John died in infancy and on 29 Apr and their daughter Maria also an infant died “of bowels”on 27 Aug. There appear to be no baptisms for John or Maria but we presume that they were twins. There was another son Johnson born 1812 who died in infancy. He was probably named after his paternal uncle Johnson Howes (see below).

Joseph Challis was buried in Ramsgate on 5 Feb 1834 aged 76 So, we know he was born about 1758 and his mother, Sarah, was born about 1737. The consensus in family trees online is that Joseph was  baptised 25 Apr 1762 at Southminster, Essex son of Joseph Challis  and Sarah Lingley who were married 12 Oct 1761 at Sourthninster but there is no convincing baptism for her around 1737 so the evidence for Jospeh coming from Southminster is very weak. We propose an alternative that establishes beyond doubt that Joseph Challis came from Witham, Essex.

There was a Joseph Challis/Chalice born 5 Apr 1758 and bap 23 Apr 1758 at Witham Essex son of Joseph and Sarah Chalice. Joseph Chalice senior married Sarah Havers on 21 Oct 1756 at St Nicholas, Witham. The transcript records her as Haven but she was actually Sarah Havers who was bap. Faulkbourne, Essex (bout 2 miles from Witham) on 24 Apr 1737 dau. of Andrew and Ann Havers. Sarah married Jospeh Challice in 1732 when she was 19 which is reasonable given that both her parents were dead. Sarah had an elder brother John born 1733, and sister Ann born 1734 so we presume her parents were married about 173 2 but their marriage has not been found nor has the baptism of Andrew Havers which we presume would be about 1710. Andrew Havers was buried at Faulkbourne in 1749 and his wife died in 1753, but their ages were not recorded.

Joseph and Sarah Challis had a second son, William b 1760, who went into the army, was seriously injured and became a Chelsea pensioner. He married but there is no evidence of children. Joseph and Sarah also had two daughters; Sarah  b 1763 and Ann b 1766. Ann married Johnson Howes at Witham in 1800 and they live in nearby Hatfield Peverel. Johnson Howes died in 1838 and Ann made her will very shortly after his death. She left her estate to the eight children of her late brother Joseph Challis of Ramsgate. This establishes beyond doubt that Joseph Challis of Ramsgate was son of Joseph Challis and Sarah Havers of Witham, Essex.

The Descendants of WILLIAM BREWER (ca 1779 – 1827) and ANNA MARIA ADAMS (1781 – 1840)

The relationships proposed here are given in a Family Tree see here

William Brewer and Anna Maria Adams were married on 22 July 1801 at Heavitree,

Exeter Devon . They were both of the parish, and the witnesses were: Jacob Payne and

Elizabeth Adams. Elizabeth was probably Anna Maria Adams’ sister and Jacob Payne her brother

in law who married Anna Maria’s sister Hagar in 1798).

Their first three children were baptised at Heavitree ex FMP PR (Findmypast Parish  Registers):

1.1 THOMAS BREWER on 25 Dec 1801 son of William and Anna Maria.

1.2 ANNA MARIA BREWER, born 6 December 1803 and baptised 25 December 1803 daughter of

William and Anna Maria.

1.3 WILLIAM BREWER, born 23 July 1806, and baptised 10 August 1806, son of William and Anne.

Sometime in the period 1806 – 1810 the family moved from Heavitree to nearby Exminster where seven more children were born and baptised (ex FMP PR except where stated).

1.4 JAMES BREWER born 1808 – 10, Exminster (census data). His baptism has not been found. His marriage certificate establishes his father was William Brewer, Limeburner and his bible establishes his mother was Anna Maria.

1.5 JOHN C. BREWER born 14 July 1811 baptised as 11 Aug 1811 son of William and Ann.

1.6 CHARLES BREWER born 18 March 1813 and baptised 4 April 1813 son of William (Limeburner) and Ann

1.7 SARAH BREWER father William limeburner (marriage certificate) born 1815/16 Exmouth (census data). Her baptism has not been found either but a gap in the Exminster records is recorded about this time.

Then there were three more daughters of William Brewer (occupation labourer/limeburner) and his wife Anne also known as Anna Maria, living at Wrecomb Cottage, Exminster. Ex FMP PR:

1.8 MARY BREWER baptised Apr 1817 dauf of William (labourer)and Anne

1.9 SELINA BREWER baptised 18 Oct 1818 daughter of William (labourer) and Anna Maria.

1.10 CHARLOTTE BREWER born 19 Aug 1820 and bapttised 10 Sept 1820 dau. of William (limeburner ) and Anna Maria.

William must have fallen on hard times about 1820 when his youngest child Charlotte was born and he sought poor relief and had his four younger sons apprenticed see here. Presumably his eldest son, Thomas, then aged 20, was employed and had left home.

William Brewer, 13, apprenticed to Jennetta Dawe, spinster, for her house, 24 June 1820

James Brewer, 11, apprenticed to James Tilyer Blunt, esq., for his house 26 Jun 1820

John Brewer, 9, apprenticed to John Hooper, baker, husbandry work 6 Apr 1821.

Charles Brewer, 10, apprenticed to James Ponsford, butcher, husbandry work 15 April 1824

Heavitree Poor Law, Outdoor Relief, payment to registered poor, 1820 – 27, ex Sheila Jewell DFHS:

Pair of shoes for William Brewer Dec 15 1821, not given.

20 April 1820, William Brewer and family receiving weekly payments of 4 shillings up to 1823.

Sheila says “this period was also when the sons were apprenticed so William may not have been able to work and may have been ill as he died a few years later in 1827. He was buried at Exminster on 14 Oct 1827 aged 48 ex FMP PR. Was his premature death in any way to his  death in any way to his work?A person standing in a doorway

Sometime after William’s death Anna Maria went back to Heavitree and she was buried there on 16 Aug 1840 aged 59 ex FMP PR.  We know from James’s bible that his mother died 10 Aug 1840 aged 58. Anna Maria is therefore probably Anna Maria Adams baptised Heavitree 20 Nov 1781, daughter of Thomas and Mary who had at least six other children baptised there ex FMP PR:

            Grace bap 20 Dec 1767

Elizabeth bap 25 Dec 1769

Sarah bap 9 Sep 1773

Hagar bap 5 Jun 1775

Thomas bap 12 Mar 1777

Anna Maria bap 20 Nov 1781

Susannah bap 11 Mar 1784.

There was possibly another daughter Mary born 1771 but the parish records do not show Thomas and Mary as parents.

Hagar married Jacob Payne by banns on 15 Feb 1798 at Pinhoe.  Jacob Payne was a witness to Amna Maria’s marriage to William Brewer. He would have been her brother-in-law.
